Filed Return 2020 Paperwork

My filed paperwork on TurboTax cannot be found. I am logged in and nothing is in the area. I filed on 4/8/2021. It was filed and accepted, both the state and federal.

I have logged in and the only sign that I have filed and submitted is my e-mail confirmations and the payment area.

Can TurboTax help me retrieve this information.

You have to sign onto your 2020 online account using the exact same User ID you used to create the online account.

Close all TurboTax windows on your web browser (including this one). Copy and paste the account recovery website link onto a new web browser window and run the tool.

Use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of all the User ID's for an email address. Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery

If none of the user ID's received will access your 2020 account, then use the option shown in blue on the account recovery website, "Try something else"

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created. TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show. Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.

This will take you back to the 2020 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Then click on Print Center. Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return. Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets

Did you use the Windows Desktop program? The Desktop files are only saved on your computer, not online.

On the Windows Desktop program you have to manually save. It doesn't automatically save although it should ask if you want to save when you start a new return or exit the program.

If you closed without saving see if it will find your return. Go up to File-Open.

You need the file ending in .tax2020 on your computer. If you don't have the main .tax file you might have one that starts with a Tilde sign ~ like "~your name.tax2020". That file is if your computer crashes or your real file gets lost or deleted or corrupt so you can restore it. The .tax and pdf files should be in your Documents in a Turbo Tax folder. Or search your whole computer and Recycle Bin for all files ending in .tax or .tax2020.

Be sure to save frequently, go up to File-Save or Save As. Save each return with a name you can tell apart from another one. Especially if another return has the same name or initial. Like a father and son. Or if you have the same name the second return might overwrite the first one.

Thanks so much for your follow-up. I did use the Windows Desktop program. Thank you for mentioning. After filing, I logged into the online version and saved in online. I did not have the luxury to keep it on my desktop two months after I filed. I checked in June before replacing my computer. It was there when I logged in. However, now, with my new computer and the same username, I logged in over the weekend and nothing is there. I will make another attempt, but I have no other login information that I can think of.

Ok ... if you used the downloaded version then when you say you "saved it online" do you mean you uploaded the PDF to the MY DOCS section ?

What you should have done was save the PDF and .taxfile to a thumb drive if you could not leave it on the CPU.

Sorry I don't understand what you did. Did you start an online account and re-enter everything into the online version? Which return did you file? The Desktop return or the online return? If you used the Desktop program the only copy is on that computer and any backups you made. The Online version is completely separate.

If you can't find your return

You can request a transcript from the IRS

For a fee of $43 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506

@Critter-3 Yes, you are correct. And I did. However, thought inexcusable and disappointing, all of my April files saved to my OneDrive is somehow not present. Thanks for the support!

@DoninGA Thank you and will attempt to see whether I have another login which is causing me mild panic. I would not be as concerned at the moment had I already received my refund.

Don't know if this will help any Turbo Tax users but one Quicken user found them......

What I found was that my Quicken Data files ended up in the One-drive Recycle bin. Not sure how, but I found them there. I placed the files back onto the laptop and brought the files into Quicken and now have all my data back.
