The tax file I submitted using TurboTax Deluxe had my tax refund over $2,000, which included prior covid stimulus payments. My refund received was just over $500. How can I find the amount that TurboTax submitted? When I use the mobile app to check the status if I enter either of the amounts it cannot find my return.

Also, do I need to file an amended tax return to get the remainder of the refund? Thanks!

You need to contact the IRS about the adjustments to your tax return. IRS will usually send an explanation of adjustments. There is no need to amend your tax return because you don't know why or what to amend. The adjustments can most likely be explained by the IRS.

The IRS asks that you call them at these numbers:

For individuals: 800-829-1040

For businesses: 800-829-4933

For those with hearing impairments: TTY/TDD 800-829-4059

To have an efficient call, here's what you need to prepare.

Note: None of the three stimulus checks (or Recovery Rebate Credits) are considered income, and therefore aren’t taxable. They won’t reduce your refund or increase what you owe when you file your taxes this year, or next. They also won’t affect your eligibility for any federal government assistance or benefits.

The IRS and State Governments have the ability to offset a refund to pay for certain past due debts.  You generally will receive a letter stating what the offset was for.

The IRS provides a toll-free number, (800) 304-3107, to call for information about tax offsets.

Thanks for the information. I did not have any offsets, have not received a letter explaining the difference in return values, and cannot get through to the IRS. Maybe I can just file an amended return and try again?

What did you mean it included prior Stimulus payments? Was there an amount on line 30? Did you already get the first and second Stimulus? If you have an amount on line 30 you were trying to get it again.

You cant file an amended return unless you know what you need to change.

Hi, there were no prior stimulus payments received and $1800 on line 30. The refund is the same amount as if the tax payer was listed as a dependent, which is not the case for 2020.
