I have already filed my 2020 tax return, Form 1040, and received my refund.

I have unemployment benefits that were originally taxed, and now I need to file a Form 1040-x to amend the tax on the unemployment. Opened the tax return file with the AMEND return. The unemployment benefits are correctly removed from the taxable income. No data is transferred to the 1040X form. Do I have to fill in that form manually?

TurboTax software prevents me from electronic filing, claiming I've already filed and it was accepted. Do I need to file the Form 1040X by mail? What forms do I need to include in that package being sent to the IRS by mail?

You do not have to file an amended return. The IRS posted that those who have already filed do not need to file an amended return to back out unemployment benefits.

Per the IRS, if you have already filed your 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR, there is no need to file an amended return (Form 1040-X) to figure the amount of unemployment compensation to exclude. The IRS will refigure your taxes using the excluded unemployment compensation amount and adjust your account accordingly. The IRS will send any refund amount directly to you.

The IRS is the only source of information about your return and refund. Just keep checking the Where's My Refund tool on the IRS website. Keep in mind it is only updated once a day, usually overnight, so you don't have to check several times a day.

You can try contacting the IRS about your refund, but they are extremely busy this time of year. To contact the IRS, please review the steps and information below:

IRS Support Number: (800) 829-1040

To reach a live agent at the IRS support number, follow these steps:

1. Select your preferred language.

2. Press 2 for “Personal Income Tax”

IRS says:

If the Filing Status differs from the Filing Status on the Original Return, then the Amended Return must be filed by paper.

If your kids e-Filed, they (or you) can change the dependent status and e-File 1040-X.

In Part III explanation,

just put that you are amending to change dependent status.

If your kids filed to collect EIP1 and/or EIP2 (Form 1040 line 30), they will have to give that up.
