I have started with amending my 2020 tax return. My starting number was reset to $0 for Fed and $0 for NY but it is showing $100 for NJ. I have not made any changes to the return and just started with the amend return. Is n't everything reset to $0 before we start amending the changes? If Yes, why I am getting a non zero starting number?

Yes, generally the amended returns start with $0 but if there was an update that influenced your refund then it can start with a different amount.

This year there were a lot of changes made during the tax season therefore it is possible that NJ had and update that changed your refund before changing anything on your return.

I am not sure if the non zero amount is due to changes in tax law. I am seeing the exact refund that I got with my original return as the starting amount instead of zero. This is a big problem for me as this amount stays same after amending the changes and I already received the refund. It is noteworthy to mention that my amend is addition of a form for which there will be no change in tax liability ( no tax payment or refund)

It’s not possible to say why you have a non-zero amount without looking at your tax return. As awesome Tax Expert @DanaB27 said, a non-zero amount almost always comes up when there is a change to tax laws or the program.

If you did not e-file NJ, it’s also possible you filed with errors.

If you have your original NJ-1040, print out the current version in TurboTax and compare line-by-line that against the original and find out what has changed.

In TurboTax Online, click Tax Tools in the left column and then Print Center.

I just did the same. The original return and the amended return has all the details same including the refund amount. My portion of income from NJ was $1701 and there was $27 tax withheld in W2. I paid estimated tax of $1000. In my original return the tax calculated was $80 and I got a refund of $947 ( 1000+27-80). Now I am amending my federal return to include a K-1 form as I received it after I filed my return. It is not changing my Fed tax amount ($0 owe or refund). As part of the process, I am also trying to file amended NJ tax return (Non resident) and it is giving me again a refund of $947. The amended return should have given me $0 instead of $947.

It is noteworthy to mention that I have e-filed both Fed and NJ return and they were processed and I got my refunds credited to my account.

I am not sure what to do here and how to fix the problem.
