The 2nd $1,200 EIP arrived between the time we filed our original 2020 tax return and our 2020 amended return. Why our did our tax increase $1,200 on the amended return?

We had $0 tax liability on our original 2020 return. We then received the $1,200 EIP. The amended return still has $0 tax liability, but now we suddenly must pay $1,200.

Did you file for $1200 Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 return? If so, it was reversed out on the Amended Return, since you already got Stimulus #2.

But do not amend if you have not yet received your original refund. The IRS may adjust for this themselves anyway. Or are you amending for some other reason?

if you claimed line 30 on your original return,

you don't say you got it on your amended return.

That will cost you $1,200.

your revised return must say you didn't get it.

Sheesh.
