The stimulus payments are not counted as income on any year federal return.

The question is asked if you received it so that if you didn't, the IRS can get it to you as an addition to your refund.

The stimulus received is not counted as income, nor is it taxed. The year you received it has nothing to do with your 2020 Federal tax return.

The 2020 Federal tax return is simply used as a vehicle to get you your missed payments.

Just notified by IRS that I underpaid by $600.00 due to filing error based on TurboTax. What went wrong? It was bad enough that for the first time I not only did not get all my Fed withholding back, but owed them even more. How can I contact TurboTax directly to find out why?

The $600 could be the Recovery Rebate Payment- if you claimed you did not received the second stimulus but you did or did not qualify, the IRS adjusted the tax returns. Since the $600 paid your tax due, that is why you are short.

Because I didn't receive my $600.00 stimulus debit card till early Jan. 2021, I officially had not received it in 2020. As far as I can tell, my 1040 facts are true, and the IRS is saying my filing is false. Is there anything that TurboTax can help me with in this matter, or am I stuck with having to pay the adjusted $600.00 balance?

If you received the payment once, you can't get it a second time.

You'll have to pay it back.

I think you missed the point of my previous post. On my 2020 return I was asked if I had received my $600.00 stimulus payment in December. Since I did not receive it until Jan. 2021, how can the IRS act like I filed a false return; I did not have it to spend in 2020. I will be happy to declare any and all stimulus payments received in 2021 on next years tax return. Seems to me the IRS is in error. If you don't see it that way, I guess I have a problem with TurboTax as well.

Sorry a payment you got in January or February 2021 is an advance and based on your 2020 return. Enter the second Stimulus payment on your 2020 return now. The year you got it doesn't matter. If you don't report it Turbo Tax will give it to you again, which would be wrong and double. The Stimulus entry screen even says the second one is between Dec 2020 and Feb 2021 so you should include any payments you received in January and February. Obviously you know you shouldn't get it twice, right?

I made a screen shot
