topic Stimulus Check 2 and the Rebate Credit in After you file

I've got a weird situation that I haven't been able to find anywhere online so far. So, when the stimulus check 2 came the IRS sent it to a closed bank account, and I did not get the money through direct deposit. At that time the IRS said they would not be sending paper checks out if the bank account was closed due to how fast they had to make the payments, and to file a return with the rebate credit on it. I did that, and submitted my return, but then a few weeks after I submitted my return the stimulus check showed up in the mail. I called the help number for the stimulus, and the representative said to return the check with a note saying I filed for the credit and didn't need the check. I did that, but now my return is still being processed, and my tax record still shows that they issued the check and did not get it back which will probably trigger a review. What do I need to do to get this sorted out the best way?

Wait until the IRS completes processing your return. If your tax return includes the $600 Recovery Rebate Credit, then everything is fine.

Otherwise, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and see whether the amount has been credited back into your account. If it has, then amend your return. Since your original refund did not have the RRC you’ll have to amend. Hopefully the IRS processed your returned check and the amount is showing in your account. You will be able to amend in TurboTax beginning March 25.

If it has not, request a payment trace. See How do I request a payment trace to track my first or second Economic Impact Payments?
