Please print out your returns and look at the actual tax return forms to see if they say you are getting a refund or if you owe. If you owe the state you have to pay the state yourself.

I filed and it was all accepted. I am getting back around 1200 in federal and I owe around 500 in state. When turbo tax shows me a review it stated to me that my total refund for this year is around 700...that’s not right. 700is federal minus my state. I thought that they weren’t suppose to take what you owe in state out of your federa. So why is it showing up like that?

Take a closer look at the amounts on the actual tax return forms.

Your state tax due cannot be paid from your federal refund.

It is not possible to pay your state tax due from your federal refund, nor is it possible to pay a federal tax due from a state refund. The federal and state treasuries are completely separate from each other. You may have seen a TurboTax summary of your federal and state amounts that confused you into thinking one was “paying” the other. It is not. The ONLY thing you can pay for from a federal refund is your TurboTax fees if you chose that option.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

https://www.irs.gov/payments/direct-pay

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-payments/help/how-can-i-pay-my-federal-taxes/00/26212

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-payments/help/how-do-i-pay-my-irs-tax-due-with-a-check-or-money-order/00/26403

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment. For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

Thank you for the response. Ok so I thought that was how it worked but this is exactly what mine says. It says: Federal e file accepted: $1217

MI State e file accepted: $573

                        TOTAL 2020 Tax Refund: $644

so that’s exactly the wording and what it says on the review of it. So it basically shows them taking my state from my federal because I owe $573 in state taxes this year. See what I’m saying. I don’t understand why it’ssaying this if that isn’t what they r doing. My total I should be getting back is $1217. Not the $644. I’m very confused
