topic 2019 Amended Return urgent question in After you file

My original return has an overpayment of $10,000 which I applied to 2020 estimated tax.

However, I realized that I forgot to report some interest income. I started the amended return, and found out that because the additional income, there is associated tax of $2,000. 1040-X Line 18 has $10,000 (overpayment shown on original return); and Line 20 has $2,000 (amount you owe). However, the revised 1040 Line 20 has $8,000 (amount you overpaid); and Line 22 shows $8,000 (amount applies to your 2020 estimated tax).

So, the 1040-x instruction says that I need to pay $2,000. However the revised 1040 now shows the reduced overpayment (from $10,000 to $8,000) and I don't need to pay IRS (this makes sense as the extra $2,000 tax is deducted from my overpayment).

So, please help. Do I need to pay $2,000 as shown on Line 20 of 1040-x as Amount you owe?

Thank you so much

Yes, since you received your 2019 refund/ it was applied to your 2020 estimated taxes you will have to pay the $2,000 as show on Line 20 on Form 1040X to the IRS.

Please see IRS Paying Your Taxes on how you can pay your taxes.

Thanks. So, just to confirm that I will need to attach the revised Schedule B and 1040 with the 1040-X. Also, the revised 1040 will show $8,000 is applied to 2020 estimated tax (not the $10,000 in the original return). Is this ok?

Yes, you will need to attach the revised Schedule B and 1040 with the 1040-X. It is ok that the revised 1040 will show only $8,000 is applied to 2020 estimated tax since the IRS has applied the $10,000 from the original return.

Thanks for your reply.

Just want to make sure I don't send in unnecessary form. I have seen comments indicating that Form 1040 is not needed to submit as it is not the "changed Form" (only Schedule B is). Is it optional to send in 1040 or required to do this?

Even though the Form 1040 was not the main form that was changed, there were items on that form that did change as a result of your amended return. You should include the Form 1040 and Schedule B with your Form 1040X.

In the long run, it is better to include the form with the amended return instead of risking a delay in processing because it was not included.
