I am still confused. I will not have my w2 for 2020 until the end of January. By then I will be applying for my actual refund. So how can I get a refund advance in the meantime?

You can't. Not currently and they don't do Christmas loans. In the past they had an Advance on your refund. We don't know if they will offer an Advance again. But if they do it won't be until after January 1. And only if they offered it to you. You can't self select it.

your return must be accepted by IRS.

You get a fraction of your refund.

If anything goes wrong (known to happen), or you lose the card, you have a mess on your hands.

When and IF loans are offered it will not be until January. And you cannot prepare a tax return correctly unless you have your W-2.

TurboTax is not offering loans at this time. At the beginning of the 2019 tax filing season there were refund advance loans available for the first few weeks of the tax season, but you could not opt in--the loan had to be offered to you when you filed. We do not know if those loans will be offered for the 2020 season. If they do have the loans again it will not be until January.
