Mailed in returns that normally take 6 - 8 weeks to process are delayed due to the 4 month covid shutdown earlier this year ... expect a mailed in return to take 6 months to process at this time. Once your return has been opened and entered into the system for processing it will show up on the IRS WMR? tool ... check once a week until you see it in the system ... then twice a week until you get the approved message. https://www.irs.gov/refunds

My wife and I filed electronically (TurboTax 2019) joined federal tax return (Form 1040) on 07-15-2020.

I really do not care how much time IRS needs for processing. I only need to get my REFUND.

Next month I could file 2020 federal tax return (Form 1040) but my 2019 federal tax return is still in processing.

What are our options?

There is nothing you can do to speed up the processing of the 2019 return and until they complete the processing and approve the refund it will not be released. It is very possible you will file the 2020 return before the 2019 refund is in hand.

Try calling to check the status of your refund at the IRS website.

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

800-829-1040

First choose your language.
Then 2
Then 1
Then 3
Then 2
When asked for SSN do nothing it will ask twice
Then 2
Then 4
You should then be transferred to an agent, but there is likely to be a long wait.

If they can't assist you can try the Tax Advocate in your state. most are working remotely and have a backlog.

https://www.irs.gov/advocate/local-taxpayer-advocate
