Ok ... so the SS# was issued prior to your filing the return ? And you used the ITIN by mistake ?

If so not sure if the IRS is correct in this matter but if you do amend the 2019 return just to get the stimulus check then I think you will be sadly disappointed as amended returns are taking 6 months to process and until it does the stimulus will not be issued. But I you do want to mail in a 1040X then the amounts in columns A&C will be identical and column B will be blank. On page 2 you need to explain why you are sending the form.

I highly recommend you only mail in the 8822 at this time and wait for the credit on the 2020 return that will be filed in Jan 2021.

Also if you have not yet done so make sure to alert the IRS about the ITIN to SS conversion for record consolidation.

Amended returns take 4-6 months to process.

#1) You do not amend to change an address.

Change an address this way:

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8822.pdf

#2) What is wrong with the SSN? Why do you need to change it?

An incorrect SSN should have caused the original return to reject was it accepted?

If the SS# was issued after you have filed then you have nothing to amend ... you cannot go back to get any credits left off the return if you filed already using an ITIN.

Mail in the form 8822 to change your address. And check your state's web site for their form if needed.

You need to notify the IRS, so it can combine all of your tax records under one identification number. This is from IRS website:

What do I do when I am assigned a social security number (SSN)?
Once you receive a SSN, you must use that number for tax purposes and discontinue using your ITIN. It is improper to use both the ITIN and the SSN assigned to the same person to file tax returns. It is your responsibility to notify the IRS so we can combine all of your tax records under one identification number. If you do not notify the IRS when you are assigned a SSN, you may not receive credit for all wages paid and taxes withheld which could reduce the amount of any refund due. You can visit a local IRS office or write a letter explaining that you have now been assigned a SSN and want your tax records combined. Include your complete name, mailing address, and ITIN along with a copy of your social security card and a copy of the CP 565, Notice of ITIN Assignment, if available. The IRS will void the ITIN and associate all prior tax information filed under the ITIN with the SSN. Send your letter to:

     Internal Revenue Service
     Austin, TX 73301 - 0057

I have filed my spouse return with ITIN but it should be SSN . This is the reason why my stimulus money is stuck . I called IRS and they have asked me to file 1040X with amendment of ITIN to SSN.
