When I filed I was told over $12000 I was getting refunded between the two and now seeing what I’m actually getting is over $5000 total, what happened and what went wrong?

You expected a $12,000 tax refund? That is a pretty huge refund---maybe you made a mistake and the IRS caught it and reduced your refund. The IRS will send you a letter explaining why your refund is less. No one at TurboTax knows what they did--the IRS does not share any information with TurboTax after you file your return, nor does the state tell TT anything after you file.

Federal and state come separately. At the end Turbo Tax shows you a summary of the net combined federal and state. But that is only for your info.

Where are you seeing the 5,000?
