What tax year? 2019? You say you e-filed it in April 2020? What does it say here:

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

The IRS says you have to pay penalties and interest? So you had tax due on your return? How did you pay it? When did you pay? Do you see any proof that the payment came out of your bank/credit account?

What was on line 23 of your Form 1040?

@ckhGOO wrote:

Once the IRS has accepted the federal tax return, no one from TurboTax would be able to assist you with this IRS issue. TurboTax receives no information whatsoever concerning a tax return or tax refund from the IRS.

You need to speak directly to an IRS agent, not the Tax Advocate. If they told you that the IRS federal tax refund website for the status of a tax refund is incorrect, even though the tax return shows as being Processed, they do not know what is going on with your tax return.

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 4 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.

I'm confused. Do you have a refund or tax due? Sounds like they got it but want you to amend it? It's too early for the IRS to be asking for you to send in a 2019 return. Could it be for 2018? Did you get a letter? What does it say? They must have changed your return saying you left off income or reported it on the wrong line.

Already talked to IRS as my refund status has been saying "received, processing" since mid-April; they asked if I received any correspondence, I said no, they say they can't help due to limited info but when things open up to call TA. Tax Advocate not returning my calls so contacted my congressman who contacted IRS directly. 30 days & 1 week later congressman contacted Tax Advocate due to nonresponse from IRS. Tax Advocate says "A review shows that you e-filed but your filing has not been received for processing by the IRS." Yet TurboTax emailed me saying it was accepted by IRS Apr 23. They recommend I e-file again and wait 60 days for it to be processed (of course now penalties & interest apply). If no response in 60 days Tax Advocate will intervene. Can't Turbo resumit with proof of submission date? I get different answers & responses everytime I talk to someone. What to do now?

If you have no taxes owed or are receiving a tax refund, there are no penalties for filing at tax return after the due date. If your federal tax return shows Processing on the IRS website then your tax return was Accepted by the IRS - https://www.irs.gov/refunds

If you are getting a refund there are no interest or penalties. You have 3 years to file for a refund. They must have changed your return to be a tax due. You need to find out what they changed.

So it sounds to me like the IRS has had my e-filed return since April 23 (3 months), I should have had my little piddly refund in 3-6 weeks maximum, but it's been 12+ weeks. So if I understand correctly I can call IRS again (3rd time) to see what they say now; or just wait to see if I ever get the refund: or file an identical new return for the 2nd time.

So the IRS really did not tell you that you owed penalties--you just thought that? There is not a penalty or interest if you are getting a refund. And---it seems like you still do not know for sure if your return was really accepted --- or you just did not say.

What does it say when you check the e-file status?

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

If it was accepted, then you can check the refund status on the IRS refund site. Refunds are slow this year due to the pandemic. You cannot e-file it again. If you e-filed it and it was accepted, any other attempts to e-file will be rejected. And mailing it will take a long time--mailed returns have been piled up in trailers for months. You need to cool your jets a little and let the IRS process your return.

To check on regular tax refund status via automated phone, call 800-829-1954. (This line has no information on Economic Impact Payments.)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 20 of your Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

Tax Advocate says "A review shows that you e-filed but your filing has not been received for processing by the IRS." this seems almost impossible unless the IRS computer crashed during the time your return was being transmitted. it is the IRS computers that tell TT whether it is accepted or rejected. first I would go to IRS website register and see if they have a transcript of your 2019 return. there shouldn't be one if it wasn't processed.

If you are due a refund there are no penalties for filing late so I would keep it simple. try to e-file again.as you were instructed. this shouldn't be allowed because you already e-file according to the TA. But really can't be positive it will be rejected. if rejected, then paper file. use a method where you get proof of delivery. your refund will take longer.

if you owe then paper file. did you keep the TT acceptance e-mail? if so, include that. in the TT file if you save as PDF all forms and calculation worksheets hopefully there is a Postmark Report:Electronic Postmark include that. include payment follow TT instructions for data to write on check. Include a cover letter that explains you filed on such and such a date as shown by TT acceptance letter and Postmark report. if you have written documentation about all these events include that. finally state that since the original return was timely filed and payment was to be made on such and such a date (any date on or before 7/15/2020 would be timely), you request abatement of all penalties and interest for late filing and payment. include what IRS agents that you talked to and dates if you can. That you were told by the TA - indicate the name - the tax return was successfully e-filed but for some unexplained reason was not processed.

hopefully the IRS will waive the penalties and interest if you owe. if not, if it's worth it, you may need to engage the service of a pro to file form 843. this is a claim for refund or abatement of penalties and interest.

- • A refund or abatement of a penalty or addition to tax due to reasonable cause or other reason (other than erroneous written advice provided by the IRS) allowed under the law.

Was your issue ever resolved? I'm experiencing the same and can't get a hold of anyone. I filed my 2019 Tax Return using TurboTax Deluxe. The Turbo Tax website says my federal return was accepted on April 1st. However, I'm unable to retrieve my transcripts and I have not received my refund. When I called the IRS I was told that they don't have a record of my filing and to allow 4 weeks as they have been experiencing delays due to COVID... That was in May and still nothing, no letter, no transcript, no way to confirm they actually received my e-filling or not... I have been calling TurboTax too as the IRS rep stated they have no record of my filling but there is no way to get a person on the phone. I don't know what to do at this point. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
