Amended returns are not accepted, they are processed.

-- Amended returns can only be mailed - allow 8-12 weeks - can take up to 16 weeks (4 months) for processing.

You can check the status of the amended return here, but allow 3 weeks*** after mailing.

***Because of COVID-19 the time might be much longer than 3 weeks.

Eventually you will get a letter from the IRS telling you that they have processed your amended return. But as macuser_22 said, it will take a very long time because of delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Of course - a 1040X *IS* the amended return. Without a 1040X you have not amended anything.

Amended returns can only be mailed. It is suggested that it be mailed certified with return receipt (or other tracking service) to verify that the IRS receives it.
