Sent daughter's return in and was accepted but did not mark her as being able to be claim as a dependent. Sent main taxes in and rejected because we claimed her as a dependent. Sent amended forms in for daughter's taxes over 6 weeks ago but not in system.

What is best action to get main taxes filed or do I need an extension?

Your daughter's amended return will not be processed for many months and even if it is, the IRS database will not likely reflect the fact that she can be claimed as a dependent this year to allow you to efile your return.

You will have to go ahead and print and mail your tax return to get it accepted or remove her as a dependent to efile your return and then file an amended return later in the year to claim her.

Thanks, does that mean I should pay the full amount or can I send in amount if I do claim her?

You will be mailing in the original return where you claim your daughter ... if you owe on that return you should pay the balance due with the mailed in return.

If you efile without claiming her, the payment must be for the full amount owed by July 15 to avoid an underpayment penalty. If you are going to owe or just get a small refund by claiming her, I would go ahead and mail the return with her claimed on it rather than having to file an amended return later.

They don't reject mailed returns. It will be processed as filed and then later in the year it will be reconciled with her amended return where she indicated she could be claimed as a dependent.
