I hope I am on the right board. After submitting my non filer form for my stimulus check, I realized that my fiance was listed on the form as my dependent. This was an error which kicked her non filer form back. How can this be corrected? I have received my funds, but since we are both out of work, her money would be a God send! Thanks in advance!!

If she meets the requirements to be claimed by you, then she can't claim herself even if you choose not to claim her. If she doesn't meet the requirements and you just claimed her by mistake, then she would have to file a tax return and not check the box that she can be claimed by someone else to file as independent.

She will probably not be able to efile the return since her name and SSN or on the return efiled by you on the non filer portal. If she can't efile, she will have to print and mail her return to get it accepted.

The IRS is way behind processing mailed tax returns and hasn't said when they will start processing them again. It may take months for her return to get processed.

While it is no help for you now, she can claim the stimulus payment on her 2020 tax return filed in early 2021. The payment is actually an advance on a 2020 credit.

She hasn't worked in several years, is there a special form or just do a 1040 and list all zeros? And do you think it would be helpful if she included a quick note explaining the situation?

I can't even begin to thank you enough!!!

If she had no income and lived with you the entire year, then she may qualify to be claimed by you and can't file a return to claim herself. See this for whether you can claim her or not: https://blog.turbotax.intuit.com/tax-deductions-and-credits-2/family/who-can-i-claim-as-a-dependent-7658/

If you can't claim her because she doesn't meet these requirements, then she could write on the front of the form 1040 that she mails: "Claimed as a dependent by mistake on a non filer portal tax return."
