Sent in my 2019 taxes in February. Realized I didn’t claim one or my kids. I amended March 13. When I check on the status online on the original taxes and the amended ones there is no update on either? I attached a photo of what I am getting. Anyone else? do I need to call. I realize maybe it hasn’t been long enough but even for an update online? I’m worried I messed up some more. I know my addresses don’t match with what I entered and what’s on my w2..

Re: Amended return

If you amended before the original return has been processed that was a mistake. You should always wait for the return you filed to be fully processed before you send in an amended return. What you did could just cause confusion and delays. And...unfortunately, this is a bad time to be mailing in an amended return. See below:

The IRS is not working on mailed returns now---and an amended return can only be filed by mailing it in. Under normal circumstances you would be able to see something about your mailed in Form 1040X after about three weeks, but that is not the case right now. The usual 4 months for processing an amended return is going to take longer. Sorry.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/20/politics/irs-mail-trailers-covid/index.html

MAILED RETURNS

Per the IRS website IRS Operations During COVID-19: Mission-critical functions continue: The IRS is not currently able to process individual paper tax returns. If you already have filed via paper but it has not yet been processed, do not file a second tax return or write to the IRS to inquire about the status of your return or your economic impact payment. Paper returns will be processed once processing centers are able to reopen.

If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

TurboTax will not know anything about your amended return, and nor will TT know that you put your 1040X in an envelope and took it to a mailbox. TurboTax does not get updates on mailed (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site.

https://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Wheres-My-Amended-Return-1

https://www.irs.gov/filing/individuals/amended-returns-form-1040-x/amended-return-frequently-asked-q...

It might be that your amended return has never even made it out of the envelope you mailed it in. Keep watching the IRS refund site for the status of your original return.

IRS phone lines supported by customer service representatives for both taxpayers and tax professionals are not staffed at this time. To check on regular tax refund status via automated phone, call 800-829-1954. (This line has no information on Economic Impact Payments.)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 20 of your Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds
