I am in college, but I don't live there. I have my own apartment with my own address and my own bills. I have not lived with my parents in over a year and they don't provide more than 50% of my expenses.

I am unable to be claimed as a dependent, that's not the issue. I already mailed in my amended return and am waiting on the IRS now, though I still don't know if I will receive the stimulus check

so... i messed up.

I filed my own taxes early in February, according to FAFSA I am a dependent. I don't know why, but for some reason I thought that I counted as a dependent on taxes because I am not yet 24. Well, when I went to help my mom do the taxes last week, it turned out they couldn't claim me as a dependent due to me not living with them and some other things.

So here's the problem: I apparently can't get a stimulus check because I said I was a dependent and I didn't get my education credit either because I checked the box about being a dependent.

Can I still amend my tax to not only get my stimulus check but also my education credit? How do I do that>

well, a couple of problems here.

Are you in college? it's probable that your parents CAN claim you. living away from home at college is considered temporary and it's as if you are really living at home the way the IRS looks at it.

you CAN BE claimed by your parents (immaterial whether they do so or not), if THEY can pass these 4 tests: (answer them from THEIR perspective)

1. The person either (a) must be related to you or (b) must live with you all year as a member of your household.
2. The person's gross taxable income for the year must be less than $4,200 in 2019. (this question doesn't matter if you are a full time student in 2019 and under the age of 24 on 12/31/19)
3. You must provide more than half of the person's total support for the year.
4. The person must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. resident alien, U.S. national, or a resident of Canada or Mexico

for the support question if they are paying more than half of rent/ room costs, food, utilities, transportation / car costs, medical costs, insurance costs, COLLEGE Costs, they they are providing more than 50% of your support

there appear to be a number of issues here.

1) your parents maybe should have taken you as a dependent

2) the 1098T form should have been on THEIR tax form
