If i accidentally filed that someone could claim me as a dependent, but no one is claiming me as a dependent. Should i filed an amended tax return? Especially since the coronavirus stimulus check is going based off dependency?

Yes, if you filed your 2019 return incorrectly, you can file an amended (1040X) return in TurboTax. Here is how:

In order to file an amended return, make sure that your 2019 return was accepted in TurboTax Online or paper-filed through the mail by the IRS.

To prepare an amended return through TurboTax, follow these steps:

Sign in to TurboTax.

Scroll down to Your tax return & documents (you may need to select Show), select 2019 and then Amend (change) return.

Select Amend using TurboTax Online.

Carefully follow the instructions. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal on amended returns.

When finished, we'll give you instructions for printing and mailing your amended return as amendments can't be e-filed.

Here is a chart from IRS Publication 501, for more information on claiming dependents.

Hi, I also had the same question and your answer really helped!

I am in the process of amending my return for this exact reason, although I do not see a line or box that can change the "someone can claim me as a dependent" option. How exactly do I go about the alteration? Also, will I have to fill out any other portion of the 1040X if I am not making any other changes?

Thank you in advance!

You would need to back through the "My Info" section and re-answer the interview questions.

If that is the only change, that would be the only edit you would need to make.

Please be sure that someone else could not claim you, for example, have proof that you supplied more than half of your own support.
