It was an error on my part. I'm over the age of 24, so can't be claimed as a dependent, but wouldn't have been claimed as a dependent in any case.

I realized my mistake after my return was already filed. I went to make the quick amendment, but apparently you cannot E-file a federal amendment through TurboTax.

I'm currently abroad under a lockdown, so mailing in an amended form seems out of the question. I figure the IRS might catch this themselves considering my DOB. However, I'm worried as I've read those claimed as dependents are not eligible for the new stimulus checks that will be deposited by the federal government soon. I'm curious if the error on my return will make me ineligible or, since no one is actually claiming me, will it not matter?

Of course, if there's a way to amend the file online, would also love to know! Thanks for any and all help.

Once your return has been accepted, you will not be able to make any changes until after your refund has been processed. Amending your return means filing a new form, 1040X. This is only required in certain situations. In other situations, you can change your original return and you should not file a new form. Please click Do I need to amend? to learn more.

You should not try to amend your return until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund or your payment has cleared. Amended returns do not “catch up” to your original returns and replace them. They are processed as two separate returns.

If you wanted the payment this year, you would need to amend your 2019 tax return.

The stimulus payment is an advance on a tax credit for the 2020 tax year. If you are listed as a dependent in 2019, but not in 2020, you will not receive a stimulus payment this year, but will receive one when you file your taxes next year.

If you amend your current 2019 tax return, you would not get the payment until after the return has processed. The IRS is not currently processing mail-in returns and amended returns are mail-in. Generally, a mail-in amended return takes 6 weeks to process, but at this point, it is impossible to tell how long it would take.
