On my daughters return (which was e-filed a week ago) we somehow messed up ensuring the "someone can claim you as a dependent" box was checked. We have went through the amending process on Turbotax and printed out/signed all the forms both federal and state. However, documentation stated it may take several weeks if not up to 4 months for the amendment to be processed. Mailing amended forms this week. Meanwhile, I recently got around to filing my return jointly with my wife and it was rejected because it picked up on SSN of daughter being claimed on both returns. (supposed to be claimed as dependent on parents return). Turbo tax wording indicates if I leave her (dependent) on my return I will have to file in paper form since its not a simple correction of my return but from my understanding required the amending of daughter return to then allow my return to be valid. Is this correct or will turbo tax pick up on when the daughters amended return is processed and then allow my e-file rejected return to be accepted? OR, do I have to somehow re-efile or print out and send in? With the recent virus extension from April until June I, the daughters amended return might actually get processed before June, otherwise I am not sure how this was going to be corrected before April 15th (unless I filed an extension?). I could delete her as a dependent but will most likely owe even more taxes. Any thoughts on this scenario? (IRS is not taking phone calls today because Ohio is in virus lockdown)

MY DEPENDENT CLAIMED HIS OWN EXEMPTION

Your dependent filed a return without saying he could be claimed on your return and your return was rejected? AFTER his return has been fully processed and he has received his refund, he has to file an amended return that says he can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return. Amended returns (form 1040X) have to be printed and mailed. They cannot be e-filed; it takes the IRS a couple of months to process them. Meanwhile, since your e-filed return has been rejected, you now have to print and mail it in to the IRS. You will not be able to e-file. You do not have to wait for your dependent’s amended return to be processed. Remember that when you mail a return, you need to include copies of your W-2, etc. with your return.

For your dependent:

How do I amend my 2019 TurboTax Online return?

Yes, your first sentence question is correct. Thanks for the info. Wait for her refund to arrive, then mail the amendment 1040X. In meantime can file mine as originally planned via paper and include paper copy of W2. Got it. Thank you very much!
