You are far from being the only young taxpayer to make this mistake. it happens all the time. Your parents do not need to send your 1040X with their paper tax forms. They can still claim you as a dependent on the return that they mail in. The IRS will handle it just fine.

I am amending my return to state that I am being claimed by my parents on their already submitted return. My return was e-filed, theirs was also, but was rejected because I didn't claim I was a dependent. I am a full time junior college student. I am getting mixed information from turbo tax about when we need to submit my amended return. It was accepted electronically. (original return, I know I need to paper file. How long will my parents have to wait to refile and will they need to do an amended return even though theirs was correct.

There is no reason for your parents to wait for you to amend. Their chances of being able to e-file this year are non-existent. They have to file on paper.

I SHOULD HAVE SAID I COULD BE CLAIMED AS A DEPENDENT

Did you say you could not be claimed as someone else’s dependent, but it turns out your parent(s) can claim you? Now your parents’ return is being rejected when they e-file, or it will be rejected. That means your parents must print, sign, and mail their return. They can still claim you as a dependent, but they cannot e-file now. Not even if they wait for you to amend, so they should not wait for you to do that.

Your part in fixing this is to wait until your return has been fully processed and you have received you refund. THEN you need to file an amended return, called a 1040X, to change the way you answered that question in Personal Info about whether you can be claimed as someone else’s dependent. You will have to print and mail the 1040X—it cannot be e-filed.

How do I amend my 2019 TurboTax Online return?

A 1040X cannot be e-filed. It must be printed and mailed. It will take about 4 months for the IRS to process an amended return. It is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it, like UPS or certified mail, so you will know it was received.

Wait about 3 weeks from mailing and you can check the status of your amended return:

https://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Wheres-My-Amended-Return-1

https://www.irs.gov/filing/individuals/amended-returns-form-1040-x/amended-return-frequently-asked-questions

Thank you for replying, I was inexperienced in filing so I didn't realize that I needed to state I was a dependent when I did my return. Do you think my parents need a copy of my amended return to file with their paper return? If I understand you correctly, my parents can file by paper the rejected return as long as they print and mail it?

Again thank you for your help.
