topic Ameded Tax Return in After you file

I filed my tax forms electronically, and they were accepted by the IRS. After the acceptance, I realized that I entered 529 info about my son incorrectly after consultation with this community. I updated my return with the corrected information, and I swung from owing money to getting a refund. It looks like I have to file an amended return, but it also looks like I have to mail it. Since I just filed electronically yesterday, do I have to wait to file the amended return, or can I mail it this week.

You need to wait until your original return has been fully processed before you mail in an amended return unless you want to confuse the IRS and perhaps delay your refund for months.

How do I amend my 2019 TurboTax Online return?

A 1040X cannot be e-filed. It must be printed and mailed. It will take about 4 months for the IRS to process an amended return. It is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it, like UPS or certified mail, so you will know it was received.

Wait about 3 weeks from mailing and you can check the status of your amended return:

https://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Wheres-My-Amended-Return-1

Thanks. How can I determine when my original return has been fully processed? Do I get notification from the IRS?
