OK Here are some more details. We ran through turbotax two ways (1) me claiming her as a dependent and (2) not claiming her. She also tried her return both ways. Whether I claimed her as a dependent or not my refund did not change. When she did her return with me claiming her and she not she ended up owing, when claimed herself and I did not she got an EITC and got a small refund. When we filed I accidentally sent the wrong one of mine. When she then filed hers was rejected. Turbotax file by mail instructions say that my amended return could take up to 16 weeks to process. Does she have to wait until my amended return is processed, do I get any notice when it is done? If it is going to be 16 weeks then she must file an extension, right? Seems like a lot of crazyness for a few bucks.

I filed my return and accidentally included my daughter as a dependent. When she filed her return it was rejected. If I file an amended return removing her as a dependent, how long should she wait before refiling her return? And should she file a extension?

First, if your daughter made less than the standard deduction, $12,200, she can file by checking the box that says someone can claim her. It will not affect her income tax return.

If this is not the case, you must file an amended income tax return. Your daughter will have to file by mail claiming herself as a dependent, as the IRS' system will show her being claimed by you and her return will be rejected.

She will need to paper file. Even with the amendment, she will not be able to efile.
