I have tried, and it just tries to import the 2017 data into the 2018 return. Not what I want to do.

No. You have to use the 2017 software to amend a 2017 return. Did you not save the 2017 software?

You will need the 2017 software to amend a 2017 tax return. If you don't have it you might be able to get a download from Turbo Tax. Call customer service 1-800-446-8848.
