You do have a mess. If you used the wrong software to prepare a 2017 return-and it sounds like you used the online software that can only be used for 2018 by mistake--then now in order to file a 2017 return you have to download the desktop software to prepare a 2017 return and print sign and mail it in. You cannot e-file it. Critter has already told you how to get that software, which can only be downloaded to a full PC or Mac, not to a mobile device.

Here is another link to get the 2017 software

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

As for your 2018 return, was it accepted or rejected? If it was rejected, it will be easier. If it was rejected, you can go back in to the 2018 software program and correct the income you entered and put in your 2018 income, and even try to e-file it. You will have to try using zero as your AGI to e-file it. If zero will not work you will have to print sign and mail 2018.

BUT if that wrong tax return (the one where you entered 2017 using 2018 software) was e-filed and accepted, then you have to wait for it to be fully processed and then prepare an amended return and change the income you entered to your 2018 income. You should not try to do that until the return has been fully processed and you have received your refund, or you will confuse the IRS.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1894381-how-to-amend-change-or-correct-a-return-you-already-filed?jump_to=answer_3288565

A 1040X cannot be e-filed. It must be printed and mailed. It will take about 3-4 months for the IRS to process an amended return. It is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it, like UPS or certified mail, so you will know it was received.

Wait about 3 weeks from mailing and you can check the status of your amended return:

https://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Wheres-My-Amended-Return-1

https://www.irs.gov/filing/individuals/amended-returns-form-1040-x/amended-return-frequently-asked-questions

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1908543-do-i-need-to-amend

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2566895-what-does-it-mean-to-amend-a-return
