The reason I need to amend my 2017 return is that I need to include a second state where I had rental property. When I create the dummy return, can I download and install my domicle state (CO) and download and install my rental property state (CA)? And then open the my *.tax2017 file? Will I have to pay for the second state download?

I need to amend a 2017 state return within 2017 return. Do I need to uninstall my TT premier 2018 software and install my TT premier 2017 software before opening my 2017 *.tax2017 file?

You do not have to uninstall the 2018 TurboTax software. You can have TurboTax for multiple years installed on the same computer.

You do have to install the 2017 TurboTax software, and install the state software, before you can open your *.tax2017 file. After you install the 2017 software, start a dummy tax return to allow you to download and install the state.

Ok ... first you download and install the federal program ... run an update ... then start a dummy return and put in a little personal info so you can get the state you already filed to download.

Once you have the program set up the way you had it before then open the return that needs to be amended ... when you get to the state tab you will need to buy and download the new state program.
