Did you use TurboTax to prepare your original return?
Did you already prepare the amended return? Or do you need to know how to prepare and file one?

An amended return cannot be efiled. It has to be printed, signed, and mailed.

For what tax year are you amending?

What product are you using--Online 2018 TurboTax or desktop software (CD/download)?

If you are amending a 2018 return, were you due a Federal refund with your original return, and if so, have you received the refund yet?

Not to amend but to correct form I do have extension on it

When I used e-file from Turbo Tax Basic for 2018 Form 1040 I thought I had a refund but got a letter from IRS sayunfg I owed money which I paid. I now need change an item of income. A discussion on amending from you said with tge CD version look for "Amend a filed return". I csn't find it. Please tell me where to look.

You might first need to update the filing status of your original return, In the Desktop program open your return and go up to menu item

File > Electronic Filing > Check Electronic Filing Status

Then save your return, File-Save

Then make a copy to do the amended return in, go to File-Save As

You can amend by going to

Federal or Personal (H&B)

Please explain what that means. Is it one of the following scenarios:

Does TurboTax think you were finished, but you really weren't, and now need to know how to open your unfiled return back up to continue working on it?

Or did you efile, and it was rejected, so you need to know how to open your return back to correct something in order to re-submit the efile?

I presume you used Online TurboTax for the 2017 return. Have you located the *.tax2017 data file in your online account, but when you try to download it, is access locked, and it asks you to pay? If so, the method to unlock it depends on what all you have done for your 2018 return. Please answer all 3 questions below:

1) What is the story on your 2018 return? Have you started one in Online TurboTax but have not yet filed?

2) Is your 2018 return in Free Edition or a higher edition?

3) Are the 2017 and 2018 returns in the same account?

We can tell you the steps to acquire the *.tax2017 data file so you can amend it when you answer all 3 questions above.

You'll also need the 2017 free amend software, if you haven't already downloaded it.

Did you use the online version? Have you seen this article?

You need to install the 2017 Amend program on a full Windows or Mac computer and download the .tax2017 file from online.
