How do I amend my return to no longer claim a dependant?

I claimed my daughter on my return but shouldn't have.Don't ask me how or why but I obviously wasn't paying attention when I used TT to file. She works and pays for her own Obamacare ins.

We both e-filed and each of us claimed her. Hers was rejected by the IRS who flagged her ss# as already being used on my return. My was accepted on 2/11 and I've been wtg on something from the IRS,either my refund or a letter.

So today I finally received the letter from the IRS telling me to send in my Form 1095-A(which I do not have-my daughter does!) and Form 8962. I know I don't want to do this. I just want to take her off of my tax return as a dependant so my daughter can claim herself and claim the 1095-A data that she received.

How do I proceed from here?

Once you amend and remove her from your return, you shouldn't have to worry any more about the 1095-A.

You can amend returns that have
been accepted by the IRS. If your return is pending, you won't be able to make any changes until it's accepted or rejected by the IRS. If you don't know your e-file status, we
can help you check it.

Before you amend, make sure you
have paper or pdf copy of your 1040. It is best to wait until you are sure you
have all your reporting documents so you only amend once.

Select a tax year for specific
amending instructions.

Keep in mind: You have 3 years from the date you filed your return (or 2 years after you
paid the tax due, whichever is later) to file an amended return, which means
you don't have to get it done by the April 15 filing deadline.

I amended my return but have not printed it yet. By removing my daughter, Turbo Tax says I went from a refund of $3892 to owning $500! Is that possible?

Yes, depending on the amount of credits you benefitted from. If you status went from HOH to MFS or single, if you lost EIC and/or Child Tax Credit, all these can really add up. Compare your 1040 with the previous version to see the changes.

My status is married filing jointly, same as before. When I look at the amended forms, it tells me on the 1st page to send the IRS a $500 check. At the bottom of the amended 1040 form however it says I am due a refund of $3392,which is $500 less than the original refund amount of $3892.

Just so I understand this, I am to send the IRS a check for $500 and they in turn are sending me a refund of $3392? If that is the case, what is the point of me sending the $500 in the 1st place?

Hi, i have a similar situation with my mom. We filed her as our dependent for 2018 tax and had to amend yesterday using form 1040. So my mom can file her own tax today via mail without having to wait for IRS decision on our amendment right? I am so worried. Does the amendment make us look bad to IRS? thank you!!!
