Although the IRS “Where’s My Refund” tool is available to check the progress of your return, it only applies to the tax return you filed for the most current tax year. Don't know if it still works for the 2017 return, but if not there's an alternative. You’ll need to call the IRS. When you call, make sure you have the following handy:

tax year

social security number

filing status

exact refund amount

You can call 1-800-829-1040 and follow the prompts for a live representative. Don't bother calling on the weekend, Dec 24 & 25, and Dec 31 and Jan 1st. They're closed for support on those days. The person that you speak with will have direct access to your tax return and be able to provide you with a status update.
