I don't want the tax amount due to come out twice. I need to change my payment method from checking account to credit card (American Express). If I pay through the service provider website now, will that cancel my taxes coming out of my checking account?

If you have already filed your return, then
no it will not automatically cancel the payment -

Once the return is filed and accepted, you will have to call the IRS's payment services hotline to cancel any automatic payment you have scheduled. They advise to wait 7-10 days after your return was accepted before calling to give the system time to reflect your information.

"Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling."

https://www.irs.gov/uac/pay-taxes-by-electronic-funds-withdrawal

If you have any issues using the above number, you can also call the regular IRS number at 800.829.1040 to speak to a regular customer service representative.

After you have confirmed that the scheduled payment has been cancelled, then you can go ahead and make the credit card payment. You can use the service provider above or use the link below -

Your reply suggest that the IRS has control of where the money comes from. The IRS indicates that Intuit takes the money out of my account and sends it to the IRS. Which one of you is it?

TurboTax cannot pay any taxes for you, federal or state.

If you have taxes owed and want to pay the taxes by direct debit from your bank account, then you enter that information on your tax returns. The direct debit information is sent with your tax return to the IRS. The IRS then debits your account based on the information you provided and the date your requested the taxes to be paid.
