A state income tax return cannot be e-filed until the federal tax return that you e-filed has been accepted by the IRS. TurboTax will send you an email when the federal return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS. The IRS has stated that they will not be accepting 2016 federal tax return until January 23.

To e-file your state return after the federal return has been accepted by the IRS click on State Taxes at the top of the program screen to continue the state return. After the state review for errors click on File and follow the interview to e-file the tax return.
