I Entered my CSA1099R as an OPM entry, correctly. Did you not understand the question? Do you not know what a 2018 CSA 1099-R ( Rev. 1/2019) looks like? My original question had to do with the TurboTax wording, when confronted with Box 2a on CSA1099R (Taxable Amount) that is marked UNKNOWN. If you enter nothing (leave space blank) TurboTax asks the question "was the amount shown in the Taxable Annuity box the taxable amount?".....THERE IS NO TAXABLE ANNUITY BOX ON CSA1099R (rev. 1/2019) …..OMB form 1545-0119

Still awaiting an educated response from someone familiar with Turbotax....and the questions it asks.

It sounds as if you are not entering your 1099-R CSA in the correct section.

TurboTax has a separate entry for the OPM, please be sure to enter our form in the right section:

Scroll down and select IRA, 401(k), Pension Plans. On the screen Tell Us Which 1099-R you Have please be sure to select CSA -1099-R Civil Service annuity or CSF-1099-R Civil Service survivor Annuity. Select Continue and you will see automatically filled in information on OPM. Select Continue again and you will see Enter Annuity Information screen. You will be prompted to data entry and additional questions about your annuity. Please be sure to enter all information – including your contributions- exactly as it appears on the form.

Thank you for the clarification. When box 2a shows as unknown, leave it blank and select NO, a different amount was taxable. The program will calculate the amount based on your Total employee contributions and follow up questions.

There is no screen with the message "Tell us which 1099-R you have." So, I still don't know how to answer the question "Was the amount shown in the Taxable Annuity Box the Taxable Amount?"

The form does not have any box called "Taxable Annuity." Do you mean box 2 - "Taxable Amount"?

Of course, I followed all the instructions on entering data for the Federal Annuity CSA 1099-R on Turbo Tax. Using the Simplified Method, TT correctly calculated my Taxable Amount, and in the end, it claimed "We'll use this amount..." HOWEVER, when I went to my list of 1099_R's, TT had the original box 1 Gross Distribution amount!!!

Turbo Tax does calculate the amount for box 2a on your Statement of Annuity Paid form, from OPM.

When you get to the screen with Taxable Amount, click "No, a different amount ..."

Then, I used the "Simplified Method" which I believe is required, to calc. the Taxable Amount. Box 9b on the 1099-R has your Contributions, which you need to enter.

Note:

(I have not yet been able to get TT to USE this taxable amount!)

@Chaspol- You use the box 9b amount in the simplified method calculation to determine the taxable amount for box 2a. That will go on the 1040 form line 4b (taxable amount) and the 1099-R box 1 amount on 1040 line 4a.

(If you print all forms and worksheets [online version], or switch to the forms mode [CD/download version], you can view the bottom part of the 1099-R where the simplified method worksheet is.

Also refer to IRS pub 721 page 6 for more information or ask OPM for help.
