Are you aware that you can claim your children as dependents until they are 19-----or until they turn 24 if they are full-time students? Are they students?

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2021 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

They're related to you.

They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.

They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.

They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).

No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.

They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).

They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative

They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).

They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.

They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.

They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).

They made less than $4,300 in 2021.

You provided more than half of their financial support.

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.

My wife and I each received a form 6475 listing the amount for ourselves and our kids. The kids turned 18 in 2021. TurboTax is asking for the amount of recovery funds the now 18 years old received and is trying to add $1400 to their refund when I enter $0 since the kids did not recieve a form 6475. How do I enter the recovery funds for the now 18 year old kids and how do I enter it for myself and wife now that we do not have dependents?

If you can't still claim them (but you probably can and should)....

If you got a Stimulus payment for a dependent you aren't claiming for 2021 you don't have to pay it back. And They can get it on their own 2021 return. On their return they say NO they didn't get it - because you did.

The 3rd Stimulus payment is really based on 2021. The IRS just sent the checks out using 2020 to get them out fast.

See IRS Topic B first question

Questions and Answers about the Third Economic Impact Payment — Topic B: Eligibility and Calculation of the Third Payment | Internal Revenue Service
