The first answer is, that I don't know how long the IRS will take to process your amended return. They seem to work at their own pace!

If you have amendments to file for multiple years that do not have carryover information on them you can file with only a day or two between them.

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return. During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns. Do not expect quick results from amending. When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check. They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns. You can watch for information here:

You have until April 15 to file an amended return for 2018 and still receive a refund. The IRS will not pay refunds on amended returns over 3 years old. You can amend 2019 and 2020 for a full refund as well. In order to file an amended return, you must use the software for that year. Amended returns other than this year must be mailed in. I suggest tracking for the safety of your information and proof of mailing. Please follow these steps:

Save a copy of the original return before doing an amended return.

See how to file an amended return.

Follow your amend at track an amended return

Here is a great FAQ to show the math for amended returns.

In addition, you may need to file a state return.

See I need to amend my state return.

You’ll need to file a state return if your income is above a certain threshold. This amount will vary state-by-state and can also vary by your filing status.

If you filed the original returns with TurboTax just log in to your account and click on the year that you want to amend. If you already did the return with TurboTax it won't cost you anything to do the amendment. You will have to file by mail, though.

If you did not do the original return with TurboTax then you need to go to this webpage. The software will be the regular price.
