topic Extension Discrepancy 4868 in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Hi, I filed an extension before due date of apr 18 2022 for my 2021 taxes. However; on the irs form 4868, we see the following statement under late filing penalty:

Late Filing Penalty

"A late filing penalty is usually charged if your return is filed after the

due date (including extensions)."

Does this mean; if return is filed late AFTER my extension? Or does this mean, a late filing penality if your return is filed after the original due date april 18; regardless if an extension was filed?

Turbo Tax explicitly states that filing an extension does remove the late filing penalty fee of 5% per month but of course not the late payment fee. The IRS' rhetoric however; is colored and vague.

I interpret their wording to mean whether you file an extension or not, you owe late filing penalties.

"filed after the due date (including extensions)."

if you file the 2021 return on or before 10/17/2022 there are no late filing penalties provided the extension is valid.

Thanks! It's like the rhetoric is INTENDED to wall in the IRS' garden of rules so the average person doesnt navigate it well 😉
