Check her return again and see if the box for being claimed as someone's dependent is really checked --- it is on the top section of the 1040 near the words "Standard deduction." If she has that box checked then you should not be having a problem with e-filing your own return claiming her as a dependent.

If she does have it checked, then somehow her SSN has been put into the system by "someone" either accidentally or on purpose. If so, the only way those tax returns can be filed is by mail. The IRS will sort out the SSN issue.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

My daughter a full-time student filed her return using the free Turbo Tax online and on her 1040 return form, she checked "someone can claim: you as a dependent; but her return was rejected due to her SSN showing up on our tax return. And our return was also rejected because her SSN shows up as primary filer with the IRS even though she also checked that she can be claimed as a dependent. At this point, both returns are rejected. How do I fix this? Thank you.

Thank you.

I wonder if there's a bug in the "free version" of the Turbo Tax online as that's what she was using to do her return.

Also, do you by chance know if I can contact the IRS on the phone to have this sorted out and then e-file again?

The IRS answers only a small percentage of the phone calls they receive. And it is one day from filing deadline. They will not likely react kindly to a call about an e-filing problem.

Try using zero as the AGI. If that does not work then print, sign and mail the return.
