hi there, I have filed an ITIN number application for my wife and included the w-7 form and 1040 form in that application. My understanding is that only covers the federal tax part and state tax, in order to file jointly, I will need to file an extension and wait for the approval of ITIN. Once I get the ITIN then can we file the state tax return, is that correct? thanks!

California gives an automatic 6-month extension - You must file by the state return by the CA deadline to avoid a late filing penalty. The deadline is October 17, 2022.

An extension to file your tax return is not an extension to pay. Pay the amount you owe by April 18, 2022, to avoid penalties and interest.

Make a California payment

Use Payment for Automatic Extension for Individuals (FTB 3519) to make a payment by mail if both of the following apply:

You cannot file your 2021 tax return by April 18, 2022

You owe tax for 2021

To pay electronically, visit our payment options.

thanks. So it looks like I do not owe state tax but instead I can get an 8k-ish state tax return according to Turbotax, I believe I don't have to do anything other than waiting for my ITIN and do the state tax return once I get it?
