You can email using form 1116. If you have a foreign tax credit carryover that requires a Form 1116, Schedule B, it is available on 03/10 and available to be efiled 03/11. Wait until 03/12 to submit your return.

If you are required to print and mail your return, Turbo Tax will give you complete filing and mailing instructions to do this. If you owe money to the IRS, there are two ways to pay.

In your tax return, there will be a 1040V where you can send in the payment. you may separate this form from your return and it will need to be sent in and postmarked by 04/18. Also follow the following steps for other payment option:

Select File in the left menu

Select Start next to Step 2: Your refund/payment info (you might need to complete Step 1 to activate Step 2, if you haven't done so already)

Select See all payment options

Select Request an IRS payment plan on the screen How would you like to pay your federal taxes? (You won't see this screen if you owe $0 or are getting a refund)

Read the information provided carefully, then Continue

Follow the instructions on the next screen to set up your payment plan. Select Got it to continue.

In the steps, is an opportunity to enter into an installment loan agreement. Explore these options.

DaveF1006:

Thank you for your reply re. paying my "taxes due" and re. Form 1116 (I am not ready to file yet, so no problem waiting until after 3/11).

However, I am still in a quandary re. "our" State (CA) tax for my partner and myself.

- I understand that I will need to file our separate IRS returns - no problem

- But then, what about preparing our joint return for CA? What is the process?

 * I remember reading something about building a "fake" joint IRS return, but not to "file it". Do I need to re-enter all of our information into a new file on TurboTax, or is there a way to migrate or copy/paste that information into this new "fake" joint return? FYI, that would be a lot of work!

 * Assuming that my understanding of a "fake joint return" is correct, then is that where I would then download the CA tax form (or software) from TurboTax? And then do I e-file our CA joint return?

Thank you. Patrick.

You are correct - you will file these separate tax returns in TurboTax and then you will create a new account and re-enter all of the data from both of your federal returns. That will generate a joint federal and joint California return. Once you've done that you will go on to file - tell the system you want to wait to file the federal return and just file the state return for now and then send the state returns in.
