topic Estimated tax payments for 2022 in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

Hi
I am on a J-1 visa and will be considered as resident alien for tax purposes in 2022. My salary until end of June 2022 will be covered by a fellowship of my home country. For this fellowship, I will need to pay estimated taxes. I might be considered for a second fellowship of my home country for the last 6 months of the year 2022. However, the decision will be made only in May 2022. If I dont get the fellowship, I will be paid normally by University and will not need to pay estimated taxes any longer. My questions are:

- Can I use Turbotax to calculate estimated taxes if I did not pay taxes before (because of status as non-resident alien for tax purposes)?

- How do I calculate estimated taxes for 2022 if I do not know yet from where I will get my future salary for the last 6 months which will also determine if I need to pay estimated taxes or not?

Thanks!

You can calculate your 2022 estimated taxes and generate the payment vouchers:

Open your return, search for 1040-es (be sure to include the dash) and select the Jump to link.

Answer No to the question Do you want to change your W-4 withholdings for 2022?

Answer the questions about things like your 2022 filing status, income, and deductions.

Eventually, you'll come to the Print Vouchers? screen. Answer Yes and we'll include your 2022 1040-ES payment vouchers

When 2021 return was extended, an estimate of 2022 Taxes due also was made and tax paid. HOWEVER TURBOTAX has NO WHERE TO ENTER THAT in finalizing the 2021 return and calcuating the new, remaining 2022 ES TAXES DUE. TURBOTAX THUS CALUATES THE WRONG ESTIMATED TAXs on the instructions. VERY FRUSTRATING turbo tax does not take this into account.

If you used the TurboTax Easy Extension to electronically file the extension request, Form 4868, and make the tax payment with the request, the payment should already entered on your tax return. Provided you used the same user ID for the 2021 online tax return as was used for the Easy Extension. You can check to see if the amount is on your tax return by clicking on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Then click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Then click on Preview my 1040.

The federal extension payment will be shown on Schedule 3 Line 10. The amount from Schedule 3 Part II Line 15 flows to Form 1040 Line 31

To enter, change or delete a payment made with an extension request (Federal, State, Local) -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)

Click on Deductions and Credits

Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)

Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

On Income Taxes Paid, click on the start or update button

On the next screen select the type of extension payment made and click on the start or update button

Or enter federal extension payment in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to federal extension payment

Ok ... I think you are confused since both the payment with an extension and the first quarter estimate were due on the same day. A 2021 payment made with the extension form which goes on the 2021 tax return and the first quarter 2022 estimated payment that will be part of the 2022 tax return you will file next January. So did you make a 2022 Quarter 1 estimated payment OR a payment with the 2021 extension form ?

To enter, edit or delete estimated taxes paid (Federal, State, Local) -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)

Click on Deductions and Credits

Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)

Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

On Estimates, click on the start or update button

Or enter estimates paid in the Search box located in the upper right of the online program screen.
