My husband and I are filing jointly, but in 2021 he lived and worked in Nevada for over 6 months and CA for 3 months. I moved to GA in Dec. 2020 and we own a home there (he is on the title). He established residency in GA when he was home in November 2021(Driver's license). I don't know how to handle the state taxes. Nevada doesn't have state taxes, but CA does. Should we file separate state taxes?

Was your husband a resident of Nevada or California before he established residency in Georgia?

If he was a Nevada resident and was in California only for work, you could file a nonresident California tax return and report the California income. You have the option of filing joint or separate.

For Georgia, you can file a joint return, (because one spouse is a resident and one is a part-year resident) TurboTax will complete Form 500, Schedule 3 to calculate Georgia taxable income.

We were living in AZ before moving to GA. He ended up getting a job in Nevada, so he went there until he got a new job in CA. He was only supposed to be in Nevada for about 6 months and then go to CA anyway, but left the restaurant group he was with to work with a new one.
