I took an RMD from a bank who does not have my cost basis. The 1099R they sent allowed me to put in the cost basis but turbotax would not calculate the changes.

Im thinking there might be a glitch in the TurboTax MAC desktop software. I completed the section on IRA, nondeductable contributions. The program generated the form 8606-S (for wife) correctly, but not 8606-T (taxpayer). Then, I searched and found the 8606-T, but saw that "basis" was the only information filled in. When I tried to enter the necessary data manually, my keystrokes were not recorded. Any other ideas I might try?

I did not have any issues with the form 8606 over the past ten years of filing with TurboTax Mac edition.

The only way to get your Form 8606 is via the 1099-R entry screens.

If you override writeable fields, you won't be able to e-File.

Thanks for the help. I finally figured it out. 100 percent of the money that came out of my IRA went to charity. Therefore, no 8606 and no adjustment to "basis" for next year's return. My wife got the 8606 because her money didn't go to charity, resulting in necessary adjustment to basis for next year.

IRAs do not have a cost basis but instead may have basis in nondeductible traditional IRA contributions. IRA custodians have no way to know whether you made nondeductible traditional IRA contributions or not.

To enter you basis in nondeductible traditional IRA contributions made prior to 2021, click the Continue button on the page in 2021 TurboTax that lists the Form 1099-R you've entered, answer Yes when asked if you made nondeductible traditional IRA contributions, then enter the amount of basis from your last-filed Form 8606 (usually line 14).
