topic Will 19 Year Old Son's Dependent Status Affect ACA Marketplace Insurance? in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

My husband and I purchased an ACA Marketplace plan last year through an agent. We were under the impression that as long as we claimed him as a dependent that he would be on our health plan. He turned 19 in November 2021. I'm now doing my 2021 taxes and after answering questions about our son TurboTax says that he does not qualify as a dependent on our taxes because he made over $4,300. Will his non-dependent status on our 2021 taxes affect his eligibility to stay on our health plan? Health insurance and taxes are confusing enough on their own, but when combining the two it creates a whole new type of headache!

Even if your son can not be claimed as a dependent on your return, he can remain covered under your insurance health plan through December 31 of the year he turns 26 (or the age permitted in your state).
