You can't file a personal return for the year after the decedent died. If there is an estate, it would be entered on the estate tax return.

My father passed in 2020. I filed his 2020 taxes last year, but then had a sale of stock in 2021. I am attempting to file a return, but am being asked to enter a date of death for 2021 and am being blocked from proceeding. Any ideas? Should I just file old school paper forms?

Who is the executor or administrator of the estate? If it's you, you need professional legal and tax advice. If someone else is the executor, the executor should be filing the estate's income tax return, Form 1041, and estate tax return, Form 706, as required.
