My 1099-NEC Box 6 is blank. The system won't allow me to e-file unless its filled in. What can I do to bypass this? Do I enter the state that I reside in? I do have a value in box 7 but they left box 5 and 6 blank on the 1099-NEC.

If there was no state tax withheld (in Box 5) of your 1099-NEC, then please leave Box 6 and Box 7 empty.

If there was state tax withheld (in Box 5) of your 1099-NEC, and there is no state identification number in Box 6, then you can use the identification number as shown in the Payer's ITIN number Box under the Payer's name.

Box 5 will typically be the state that you worked in. If you worked in the same state that you live in it will definitely be that state. Simply select the 2 letter abbreviation for the state.

If you're not required to enter the state payer ID in box 6 you can leave it blank, otherwise, enter the Payer TIN located on the left side just below the payer's name and address.

The 1099 nec is from shipt with their address being in Alabama. I live and worked for shipt in Minnesota. Turbotax will not let me proceed without entering info for box 6 although it is blank on my form (box 5 is also blank). Box 7 (state income) has a value that I entered. So do I enter MN or AL? Thanks

If there is no value in Box 5 or Box 6, please leave Box 7 blank when entering your 1099-NEC form.
