My mother got approved for SSDI in the late year (2021) …in total she received about 3k . She had spoken with a SSA representative who told her , since they are not tax experts …it would be …in her best interest to speak with a tax profesional to see if she would have to file or not (which also included …a W-4V form..being sent to her mailbox ).. because according to them….that’s what …she will need to bring ….when she talks to a tax advisor . So my first question is… does she have to file (for year 2021) , if that’s her only income ?

My second question .
Since she’s been approved to receive SSDI for year ( 2022) ..based on the total amount of benefits… she’ll collect for that entire year ,

( which will be around 13k to 14k)
Does she have to file next year ? If that’s her only income ?

Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits are reported on a form SSA-1099 and the benefits received are to be entered on a federal tax return. The benefits may be taxable depending on the amount of other income you have entered on your tax return.

However, if the Social Security benefits are the Only income to be reported on the tax return, then there is no reason or need to file a tax return.
