I had a Healthcare.gov health plan for a few months in 2021, while I was contracting for a company before they hired me full time. My then-fiancee was on the plan with me. (We got married in 2022, so not relevant for taxes.)

TurboTax is recording that as me being self-employed; OK, fine. I entered the info for the 1095-A I got from Healthcare.gov, but TT is rejecting it because when I enter her SSN as the other covered person it says "Social Security Number policy allocations for a form 1095A linked to a business, Business Relations Premiums Smart Worksheet below, are not supported."

I have no idea what that means, but if I remove her SSN and start month/stop month, the form is rejected as incomplete.

What am I supposed to do here?

I entered her information, but she had just enough income of her own last year that she filed separately, not as a dependent.

You are only supposed to add your fiancé to your marketplace plan if you can claim her on your taxes or you have a child together. If neither of those situations applies, you have to repay any premium tax credit that you received.

Since you were not supposed to allocate this policy, you may want to contact the marketplace to see if they can issue two separate 1095-As and you would only claim your amount.

If that is not an option, to repay the tax credit you received, enter Form 1095-A as it appears, except replace the SLCSP amount with 0 for all months that you were covered. You can then select the box that says I'm self-employed and bought a Marketplace plan in the Let us know if these situations apply to you screen after entering Form 1095-A.

A limitation of the TurboTax software is that it cannot both allocate a marketplace policy and calculate the premium you paid as a self-employed health insurance deduction. If your fiancé is required to file, then you may have to deselect the I'm self-employed and bought a Marketplace plan to allocate the plan. This would result in you not getting the deduction for self-employed health insurance.

Hm. I don't know that I got a tax credit for the Marketplace at all, given the price that was on it. TurboTax said I am not getting anything back either way, so should I just remove her from it entirely and move on with life?

The numbers on the 1095-A would be wrong if you just deleted your partner, since the calculations are based on 2 people. You can try to just delete her, but the best case scenario is the IRS adjusting the numbers for you. So many have had issues with omitting the form in their tax returns altogether, that I do not see them being too helpful.

The advice of requesting a new 1095-A form with just you is pretty sound.

I called the Healthcare.gov support line, and they said they do not offer split 1095-As and I should talk to "a tax professional." After a bit more back and forth they recommended unchecking the "covered someone not on my tax return" checkbox, which let me proceed further without an issue. (I wasn't getting a premium credit advance anyway.) My taxes are now submitted.
