You can just start a new return by clicking File>Start>New Return. You don't need to delete anything.

Won't the previous return I finished for the most part be filed with the same name?

The reason I ask is that I think I may have double added some of the information on a sale of mutual funds or information as our taxes owed us seem to jump by $2000 on federal and we owe the state more than $1000 over last years.

I feel sure I've made an error somewhere so I thought best to just start over clean slate.

You can save the new return with a different name such as "updated return". It won't duplicate anything as it doesn't work the same as TurboTax Online. When using TurboTax CD/Download software, your returns are stored on your local computer drive or storage device, not in a cloud.

Your other option would be to continue with the return you already started and review each input section to ensure all of the entries are accurate.

Yes I did review the returns in the different sections but I don't trust myself to spot the mistake; if there is one.

I was thinking I will pay more attention as I input the information and this time let Turbo retrieve the information directly. This way I will take more note of the return amounts and what info caused them to change abrubtly.

Probably an odd way to find an error but I've never had a return that had the amounts fluctuate so wildly.

You can save your current return with another name, go up to FILE - SAVE AS. Or you can delete the file directly in Turbo Tax or using Windows. To over over with a clean slate just start a new blank return, go to FILE - NEW. You can save each file with different names. They won't be combined. Just name it something you can keep track of.

For Windows,

The tax files (and PDF files) should be in your Documents then in a Turbo Tax subfolder. If you can't find them do a search for all files ending in .tax2021 or .tax2020 or .tax2019, etc.
