Your stimulus is not taxable. If you owe tax due it is for some other reason.

What you may not realize is that as soon as you began to prepare your tax return, the software was giving you the $1400 and it was shown on that "refund monitor" -----but when you entered that you received it already, the software had to reconcile the payment you received, You cannot get it twice---so it looked to you like you "lost" $1400. You did not lose it---you just cannot receive it twice.

Thanks but somewhat confused. Why "give" the $1400 before the question of whether or not the stimulus was answered? So, when TT asked the question as to whether or not I had received the stimulus I should have answered "no" if I was already getting credit for having done so?

No---you MUST say that you received the $1400 if you received it. You enter the amount from your letter 6475.

If you say no, then you are putting it on your tax return again --- and you cannot get it twice. The IRS knows if you received it. If you say you did not get the $1400 and file a return with $1400 on line 30, the IRS will just take it away and delay processing your return.

Thanks for the help. It just seems counterintuitive to get the rebate only to have to pay it back.

Yes Turbo Tax starts out giving you the full 1400 or 2800 etc. for the 3rd Stimulus so your refund was too high to begin with. Then near the end you enter how much you already got so it subtracts it. The Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30 is only if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more. So check line 30. That is confusing a lot of people this year. Same with the Child Tax Credit.
